Personnel, History, and Facilities

Roanoke A.I. Laboratories was founded in 1984 by Jim and Julia Crump and incorporated in 1986 as a commercial stallion semen freezing facility. Jim received a B.S. in General Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1971 with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology. His curriculum emphasized organic, advanced organic, and analytical chemistry; biochemistry, instrumental analysis, cell physiology, microbiology, and equine science. Jim then attended the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a B.S. in pharmacy in 1973. His pharmacy degree was followed by 20 years of practice as a pharmacist and store manager at Revco Drug Stores, Inc. He is currently a registered pharmacist in Virginia. Jim's educational and pharmacy background have proven invaluable in the formulation and preparation of extenders and the improvement of techniques for freezing stallion semen. Throughout his high school and college years he operated the family farm where he raised purebred Arabian horses, cattle, and hogs. Cattle were bred artificially with frozen semen to improve the herd quality. In 1976, he was one of the first individuals in Virginia to successfully utilize frozen boar semen, a then new technology in this species, to produce superior litters from their sows. Jim has developed techniques to collect semen from all three species of zebra while they are unrestrained: Grant's (Equus burchelli boehmi), Grevy's (Equus grevyi), and Hartmann's Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae). Frozen Grevy's zebra semen from this lab produced the first foal sired with frozen semen from any of the zebra species, on a first cycle conception. Jim is currently involved in a zebra reproduction research project with the Louisville Zoological Garden to determine the onset of sperm production and the freezability of semen from the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra. Jim and Julia are published authors in the international journal of animal reproduction  Theriogenology  on manual semen collection in the stallion and sperm production in the Grevy's and Grant's zebra. Jim and Julia were married in 1979. Julia's background includes over 30 years experience in stable management, training and showing, and Arabian horse breeding.

Roanoke A.I. Laboratories is owned and operated exclusively by Jim and Julia. Julia manages the stable and breeding shed operations while Jim performs the semen freezing, laboratory work, and handles semen shipments. Up to seven stallions can be accommodated at one time for semen freezing at Roanoke A.I. The lab is also well equipped for standing stallions with cooled semen shipments during the summer months and is USDA approved to freeze stallion semen for export.

Jim and Julia Crump's areas of expertise compliment each other and result in a team and facility you can depend on to provide top quality care and top quality frozen semen from your valuable stallion.
